We'll update this definition in a couple days if no other comments.
http://wiki.freebase.com/wiki/Commons/education/academic

Current definition: An academic is someone whose career is in academia,
which Wikipedia describes as "a collective term for the scientific and
cultural community engaged in higher education and research, taken as a
whole". This type is used to show information about such people that does
not typically apply to everyone who has received a college education.

Proposed definition: An academic is a person who is engaged in higher
education and research. This type typically includes those whose career is
in academia and who work as professors and/or researchers in universities
and research institutes. It can also include those that have held academic
posts such as visiting professorships and research fellowships.
