We originally talked about having a "notify FB that a new blog's been
started" built into wordpress.com, typepad.com, etc.  The problem
there is getting them to do it.  So the ping server seems like an easy
option which those blog hosting services could be talked into adding,
since they already have mechanisms for that.

Schwern and I have also been talking about importing CPAN data, and
there's a similar problem: unlikely to be able to convince the admins
of the Perl upload server (PAUSE) to add anything into their code, but
there's already an RSS feed that tells us about new releases, so we
could just hang a FB updater off that.
