Hi,
I've created a new type to capture artwork series on sandbox, and filled in some data:
http://sandbox.freebase.com/view/visual_art/art_series
It's a simple type with two basic properties:
- Artist (ECT Visual Artist)
- Artworks (ECT Visual Artwork)
Both properties are reciprocated.
This type may be used for two scenarios:
1) A titled art series consisting of more than one individual piece, which may or may not be named. Usually conceived as a series with a shared theme by the artist, and done together. Examples are "The Four Freedoms" series by Norman Rockwell, and "Dogs Player Poker" by C. M. Coolidge.
2) A grouping for convenience sake or for art criticism of one artist's individual artworks sharing a common theme. Usually not conceived as a series by the artist, and done over time. Examples are Monet's Haystacks series, and Van Gogh's Sunflowers series.
In general, I think removing the co-typing of "Artwork" from "Art Series" would make it less confusing, especially since all pieces of a series may not share data that would be more appropriately set at the individual artwork level. (I've detyped my examples as such.) This type also not to be confused with editioned artwork like "The Thinker" which merely has multiple copies of the same thing. :)
The Art Series type currently makes no distinction between the two, but a new property can be added if anyone think it'd be helpful.
Comments welcome.
