I have two reasons off the top of my head:

1) Somewhere to put a UPC, ASIN, or other generic product code for  
linking to online shopping, price-finding, etc.
2) Spam prevention/management -- give spammers a constructive general  
way to enter their product information into Freebase

I'm working on a blog post about "How to put your business in  
Freebase", to guide people in the right direction (rather than the  
unstructured spam we tend to see), and got caught up on products when  
I realised there's no way for anyone to link from their Company topic  
to the stuff they sell.
