[Data-modeling] should names start with "The" or not?

I cannot decide about this and wanted to see if there was already a  
consensus. If this question has been asked and answered, please let  
me know how to find where I could read such questions answered.

Why does it make sense for things to start with "The"? Looking at  
countries, I thought that "Gambia" was missing. But there it is as  
"The Gambia". So, it is sorted after things starting with "S" and  
before "U"? Wny does this make sense? Yet there are times when  
"Gambia, The" would be awkward as well. I am unsure.

And it seems inconsiderate of me to start changing these things to  
something I consider more sensible. I thought I should at least ask.
